Arifa Akter
(Mohakhali Sattala Slum, Dhaka)
Since joining the program, Arifa has started to come out of her shell. She’s becoming more responsible and independent, and she absolutely loves taking part in group activities. She’s formed close friendships and enjoys spending time learning and playing with the other children. The sponsorship has not only helped Arifa continue her education — it’s brought peace of mind and a renewed sense of hope to her whole family. The help has taken a major weight off her mother, who no longer has to struggle alone to cover the costs of Arifa’s education. Now, all of Arifa’s school needs are taken care of — from study materials and tuition support to extra help with her lessons when needed. On top of that, whenever there’s an extra balance, she also receives nutritious food and clothes, making her daily life more comfortable and secure. Both she and her mother are truly grateful to the sponsor for the support that’s helping her grow, learn, and dream big.
When we went for our visit, we noticed a little girl in torn clothes playing outside. That was Arifa. We learned about their dire situation after speaking with her mother. Arifa's father died of cancer when she was just a year and a half old. They have been living with her grandmother and a cousin Arifa's age since then. Arifa's mother is a garment worker. She supports their family of four on the meager wages she receives from the factory. It is extremely difficult for her to pay all of the bills and provide for both of the children's basic needs. Their ripped clothes serve as a sad reminder of their predicament. Arifa is now enrolled in school. She does not have to pay school fees, but the additional costs for her exercise books, guidebooks, or a tutor to assist her with her studies are simply too much for them. A sponsorship would significantly assist them in providing a better life for Arifa.
